  • Bread

    • 1Preheat oven at 375F (190C)
    • 2Line a baking sheet with foil. Place the slices of bread on a single layer.

    • 3Melt the butter and spread it evenly on all sides of the bread slices.
    • 4In the preheated oven, toast the bread for 10 minutes on one side. Flip each slice and toast for an additional 4 minutes or until golden brown.

  • White Sauce : Mornay

    • 1Grate the gruyère and parmesan.
    • 2In a small pan, melt the butter on medium heat.
    • 3Add the flour and cook it for 1 minute.
    • 4Add the milk as you whisk.
    • 5Bring to a boil and turn off the heat.
    • 6Add the grated gruyère, parmesan, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Stir until homogenized.

  • Assembly

    • 1Place half of the bread slices in the lined baking sheet (those will be the bottoms) and put aside the other slices.

    • 2Spread 1 Tbsp of Mornay on each bottom bread slice.

    • 3Add the ham and a layer of tomato slice(s).

    • 4Spread 2 Tbsp of Mornay to the upper bread slice, and place face down on the sandwich.

    • 5Spread 2 Tbsp of Mornay on the top bread slice.

    • 6Sprinkle the top with the grated gruyère.

    • 7In the upper rack of an oven, bake at 375F (190C) for 5 minutes, then broil for a few minutes until it starts to brown and buble.
